Our government needs to stop picking winners and losers
A business shouldn’t succeed because it takes advantage of special favors and political games. But that is exactly what corporate welfare allows.
Take Amazon as an example. After announcing its new second headquarters and soliciting bids from around the country, more than 200 towns, including Indianapolis, have entered the race to serve as the location for the company’s new second headquarters. Many are offering steep handouts and incentives to lure Amazon to set up shop in their communities, and they’re doing so with your hard-earned money.
Taxpayer money shouldn’t be funneled to large corporations who don’t need the subsidies. Instead, if local and state governments truly want to incentivize businesses, they should create a friendlier economic environment by lowering their tax rates. This approach is proven to work.
